2013 NFL Football: Lauren Silberman to participate in regional NFL combine

Posted: February 20, 2013 in NFL football

In a story that’s likely to gain traction around the NFL, the first female participant of an NFL regional combine will make her debut on March 2nd and 3rd. As reported by NFL.com’s Around The League editor Gregg Rosenthal, Lauren Silberman was not aware she was the first female registrant and was hoping the “2012 historical milestone rule…would prompt more women to attend tryouts this year.” From playing soccer at Wisconsin to writing a Master’s thesis at MIT about athletes and video games, Silberman is hoping she can add NFL kicker to her resume.

Unfortunately, the odds are not in her favor, as they are not in the favor of hundreds of college football players hoping to reach the same dream as Silberman. That said, if she is good enough, wouldn’t it be one heck of a story line should she earn an invitation to a mini-camp?  In a league where some players are still struggling to deal with the possibility of current players coming out as gay, exactly how would those same guys react if a woman was in the clubhouse? For every Brendan Ayanbadejo who fights for gay rights, there are many others still struggling to accept the cultural change. Maybe the first female football player would be just what the doctor ordered? Talk about a quick  transition…
